One Day Seminar on Global Partnership for Transformative Research

A one-day seminar titled “Global Partnership for Transformative Research” was held on 18 June 2026 at the Orange Hall, Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), Quetta. The seminar brought together academics, researchers, government representatives, environmental specialists, and development practitioners to exchange knowledge and explore collaborative approaches to climate action and sustainable development. The event was organized under the British Council-funded project “Empowering a Low-Carbon Future: UK–Pakistan Research Collaboration through Innovative Technologies,” in collaboration with Middlesex University London and Brunel University London. The BUITEMS project team comprised Dr. Rozeena Shaikh, Principal Investigator, and Co-Principal Investigators Dr. Bushra Haq, Dr. Maqsood Ahmad, Dr. Sobia Faisal, and Mr. Imran Ali Sani.

The seminar commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem. Dr. Rozeena Shaikh, Principal Investigator of the project, delivered the welcome note and highlighted the importance of collaborative research and innovation in developing locally relevant responses to climate and environmental challenges. An introductory video showcasing BUITEMS was then screened, followed by a video presentation introducing the UK–Pakistan Global Partnership project, its objectives, collaborative approach, and focus on transformative research and innovative technologies.

The Vice Chancellor of BUITEMS, Prof. Dr. Khalid Hafeez (TI), graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In his address, he shared his expertise and vision on low-carbon initiatives and emphasized the important role of universities and research institutions in advancing sustainable development, technological innovation, and climate resilience in Balochistan and across Pakistan.

The UK-based academic members of the project team joined the seminar virtually and addressed the participants. Dr. Kamran Ali Sani, Senior Lecturer at Middlesex University London, and Dr. Syed Sardar Muhammad, Associate Professor at Brunel University London, appreciated BUITEMS for organizing the event and highlighted the significance of UK–Pakistan academic and research collaboration in addressing global climate challenges. They emphasized the value of research, technology, knowledge exchange, and innovation in developing sustainable and scalable solutions for a low-carbon future.

Representing the Government of Balochistan, Mr. Syed Ali Imran, Chief Conservator of Forests (North Zone), Balochistan, also addressed the gathering. He highlighted the provincial government’s contributions towards low-carbon development and shared insights into ongoing initiatives being implemented in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). He particularly highlighted efforts related to deforestation, reforestation, forest conservation, and sustainable management of natural resources.

A key feature of the seminar was an interactive panel discussion moderated by Dr. Sobia Faisal, bringing together six distinguished experts from academia, government institutions, and international development organizations. Prof. Dr. Raheela Umar Sumalani, former Pro Vice Chancellor of Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University and Associate Professor at BUITEMS, discussed how machine learning is transforming environmental science by enabling data-driven approaches to ecological monitoring, climate prediction, and evidence-based decision-making. Mr. Rowaid Ullah Jan, Climate Change Specialist at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), reflected on how international partnerships can strengthen responses to environmental and climate challenges, drawing upon his experience in disaster risk reduction and development initiatives.

Dr. Nelofer Jamil, Assistant Professor and Head of Department at Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University, discussed the importance of translating academic and scientific research into practical solutions for Pakistan’s energy, water, and environmental challenges. Dr. Faheem Nawaz, Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences at BUITEMS, highlighted the policy measures and financial incentives required to promote low-carbon innovation and climate-resilient development, particularly in developing countries. Mrs. Zamurd Naz Bugti, Deputy Director at the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), discussed some of the major barriers to achieving a low-carbon future in developing countries such as Pakistan, with particular emphasis on water scarcity, resource constraints, and sustainable resource management. Dr. Gohram Malghani, Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences at BUITEMS, highlighted the important role of local communities in reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability through grassroots-level participation and locally driven climate action.

The panel discussion generated a rich and engaging exchange of ideas among panelists and participants. Faculty members and representatives from Balochistan Agriculture College and the University of Balochistan also contributed to the discussion, further enriching the dialogue on climate resilience, sustainable development, emerging technologies, and the role of research partnerships in responding to environmental challenges.

The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Imran Ali Sani, who expressed sincere appreciation to the Chief Guest, speakers, panelists, partner institutions, organizers, and participants for their valuable contributions to the event. Shields and certificates were distributed to registered participants in recognition of their participation. The distribution ceremony was graced by Prof. Dr. Khalid Hafeez (TI), Vice Chancellor BUITEMS, accompanied by Dr. Surat Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mushtaq, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Informatics; and Directors of BUITEMS. The seminar concluded with a refreshment reception, providing participants with an opportunity for networking and further interaction.

The seminar successfully underscored the critical importance of international research collaboration in developing locally relevant and technology-driven solutions to global environmental and climate challenges. By bringing together academic institutions, government organizations, development practitioners, researchers, and local stakeholders, the initiative demonstrated how collaborative research can strengthen knowledge exchange, research capacity, and innovation. Particular emphasis was placed on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), energy efficiency, environmental monitoring, and sustainable low-carbon technologies to contribute to climate-resilient development. Through the “Empowering a Low-Carbon Future: UK–Pakistan Research Collaboration through Innovative Technologies” project, the partnership between BUITEMS, Middlesex University London, and Brunel University London seeks to strengthen research networks and promote innovative solutions for a more sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon future.
